Fic: Mutual Interests
Jan. 7th, 2019 05:48 pmThe reveals for the FFXV holiday gift exchange are up! I wrote Mutual Interests, a Ravus/Ignis and Ignis/Noctis fic. It was fun! I love Ravus and it was a challenge to get his voice right, but I think I did okay and my recipient seemed happy.
I've been progressing with the first set of kanji in Wanikani.
I know all of these, I thought when they came up, pleased. No problem! Except that my complacency became an issue in seconds; it wanted me to give 'shichi' instead of 'nana', 'ku' instead of 'kyū' -- the on reading being asked for isn't the generally preferred and therefore familiar one. Oops. WK doesn't penalise you for entering kun'yomi instead of on'yomi, but if you simply can't recall the on'yomi at all then being pardoned for entering the kun'yomi is only a stay of execution. I dutifully went and re-read the lesson texts and corrected myself, and told myself to not be arrogant next time.
A note on the mnemonics: I don't think of most learning mnemonics as effective, because so many are visually based and I'm aphantastic, but the WK ones often work for me because they're narratives not visuals. Even if I'm forever going to mess up jo and jyo.

I bought myself a lifetime subscription years ago and worked my way up to level 22. I was taking Japanese lessons at my local adult learning centre and progressing quite well.
And then the centre discontinued those lessons, I got super busy with my business, and then set myself to vacation mode for more than three years as time flashed past. Oops! A visit to Japan last year hammered it home to me how much of my knowledge I’d lost, so, I’m promising myself to at least work on my kanji again.
I’ve reset to level 1 and have added the app to my phone. I’ve worked through those first 25 babystep lessons already. I got a long way last time, and I'm sure I do still know a fair chunk of the lower level items, but it feels right to clear back down to nothing to do this. If nothing else, that will be a nice ego boost to keep my spirits up.
Wish me luck?

I've posted a NY gift exchange fic for FFXV: Shades of Green and Gold. I wanted to give my recipient as many of their requested points as I could fit comfortably in a fic!
I received from my gifter a picture and some FFXV store merch (they asked via the mods if they could mail stuff to me):

Bless, sweet smoochy boys. My gifter also sent me the Ignis and Noctis pixel pins, which I think I now own... five? sets of? Possibly six. Most of which were gifts from friends who saw them and thought I would adore them, which is lovely of them. That I have even more isn't a complaint -- they're cute pins and will go in my ita bag just fine! And my giftee also sent me a Gladio badge, saying they hoped I liked Gladio, which, well, not so much, but it can do what my other Gladio badge does and be reversed to hold charms onto my bag.
I also received from the wider FFXV exchange an Ignoct fic: Thirty, a very sweet through-the-years fic of growing love.
My own FFXV exchange fic is anon for now, but the recipient seems happy so huzzah!
